Child Sex Abuse: Mumbai Police's Face Of Shame !!!!

It's a shame! The city where I have spent the past six years and have been so vocal about its generosity and its inherent beauty - I am talking about Mumbai (India) here - is suddenly turning into a shame. Well, maybe not suddenly, but surely it is rearing its ugly head much more aggressively than ever before.

For the past few days, in fact a couple of weeks really, each day I open the morning paper, disturbing stories of sexual acts against small children scream at me. First there was this unsolved case of a two-year-old girl who was sexually molested and killed, then there was a three-year-old girl who was similarly sexually molested and killed, then a case of an eight-year-old who was sexually molested, then a 14-year-old who was sexually molested, and finally, a 07-year-old who was sexually molested. Most of these girls had been picked up while they were playing outside their homes, or were with some family member and somehow, were unfortunate enough that these family members slipped for a moment in their attention towards the child and the crimes took place.

It's a shame really, not only on all of us as a country, but more so on our police who has constantly not been able to create a safe environment for children. Most of these cases happened in parks and roadsides that had thick bushes. How is it that the Mumbai police isn't in on this and does not provide permanent beat cops for such places? We say that there are many many such places where such crimes can happen and its not possible to station a police at every single point. On the one hand we complain about India's uncontrollable population growth, and on the other, we complain about lack of manpower! Why aren't these many head counts being channelised into the right direction? Why aren't more people being hired to even work hand-in-hand with the police. If a regular person like me and others can think like this, why is it that those who really have the authority to get something like this in action not doing anything on these fronts?

And this is not just restricted to Mumbai, or even India. Toddlers as tiny as barely a year old are being subjected to sexual atrocities! What have we come to!!

I am also appalled at the general lack of concern parents have these days towards their children. We all know the world has changed, nothing is innocent and beautiful anymore for a child without proper adult supervision. But where is that adult supervision? We say that we need to take care of our kids. We are the same parents who then go on to say how tiring it is to take care of a child 24*7. We hand over the child's responsibilities to a maid. We gladly let the child go and play in the park alone. We happily send them over to their friends' homes. We may even allow them sleepovers. Of course some amount of independence is necessary for each child's individual growth, but it is extremely important to understand who those people are with whom we can place the utmost trust of our children. In these times and situations, instances of family members molesting children have come to light on many incidents, so it is even more important for us as parents to keep only a few chosen individuals who we know for sure will look after our children.

No child is safe from a molester - whether a girl or a boy - and it is up to us as parents, and up to us as adults, to ensure we can protect this innocence and help our children bloom and live in a carefree environment, and nurture them into happy, healthy and caring adults.

Defending A King: His Life & Legacy by Dr. Karen Moriarty

From the book:

'To live is to be musical, starting with the blood dancing in your veins. Everything living has a rythm.' - Michael Jackson

"When I had left home days earlier, I perceived Michael Jackson as a human Bambi - 90fragile, vulnerable, deserted, in need of protection, alone - in a perilous environment. By the time I returned, I perceived Michael as Bambi's little brother." - Author

A few days back I got an email from one of the book sites where I am a reviewer, asking me if I would like to read and review a book on the most talented musician, performer and entertainer of our times, and probably of all time - the King himself, Michael Jackson.

Would I say no to that?

Sharing The Afternoon Meal With My Winged Friends

It's three o' clock in the afternoon and my daughter has just finished her lunch. But before she rushes off to play or do her colouring, she heads to the kitchen and picks up a box kept in the corner. Most days she asks me to help her open it up, some days she does it herself. She opens the lid, then heads towards the kitchen balcony, opening it slowly. She calls out to me to come over.

As we both head to the kitchen balcony, our winged friends are already waiting there for us. They flutter around, just waiting at the corners for us to scatter the grains and move, so that they can start the feast. As my daughter scatters the grains on the balcony, I fill up the water bowl that has been emptied since morning. I call out to the birds who are already sitting on nearby balconies and ledges, or flying in circles above us, some even going out a little and calling out to their friends that lunch is being served. We move away in some time, coming back to the kitchen and closing the door quietly, and almost instantly, the birds come swooping in. Within minutes the food is all gone. And just like that, so are our winged friends, after spending a little time lazing on the balcony.

I started this feast a little more than a year back. It started just by chance. Of course earlier I used to put bread crumbs on my balcony and there was always a water bowl on all my balconies and window ledges for these cute ones to come in and take a sip. Then one day while my father was here at my place, he brought in a bag of bird food and scattered it on the balcony. And since then, the feast has continued.

It's amazing actually how the birds are always on time!!! And I have to give it to them that no matter what the season, what the day, these birdies are always ready for their meal bang on time, on the dot! I have maintained a meal time of 03pm and every single day, without missing a single day, they are already present by 02:45pm, before time!! We live on the 23rd floor, and these darlings have never ever missed the floor, knowing very well where their meal is placed.

Every time they are thirsty, they fly up here to our floor and take a sip. And with each passing day, their number has only increased. What was initially a handful of birds is now a big big group of birds - pigeons, sparrows, crows - all flying in in batches....

And its something both my daughter and I really look forward to each day...

Mozilla Firefox Challenge with CrowdRise: Individual Action. Global Impact

I'm sure most of you have already seen this by now. Or maybe you haven't. Well, it was popping up on my screen every time I switched on my laptop, but maybe I was too busy to give it a look. I did today, and I believe it is worth sharing. A simple word to define this initiative by Mozilla Firefox would be 'DONATE'. Of course you are not bound to donate, or it's not that if you're not donating to one of these global causes mentioned below, you cease to be a good person. But just in case you would like to see what the various celebrity charities are working for and how your donation will help, do click on the charity name and you will get more details. Mozilla has already donated $5000 to each charity and an additional $25,000 will go to any cause that raises the most by January 11,2012.

Says the Mozilla Team:
We've brought together thousands of people to build a better Web. Not for profit, but for good. This holiday season help us take it one step further. Donate to a celebrity's charity, join their team or fundraise for your own cause. You could win prizes from the celebrity teams while doing good for the world.
